Why Cars Won’t Start in Cold Weather in Alaska

Cold weather is hard on a car battery in two ways at once, and that’s why January is the busiest no-start season in the Valley.

First, cold slows the chemical reaction inside the battery. A battery that delivers its full rated cold-cranking amps at 80°F can lose a large share of that available power when the temperature drops well below zero — and Wasilla gets there regularly. Second, cold thickens your engine oil, so the engine is physically harder to turn over. So at the exact moment your battery is at its weakest, your engine is demanding the most. A battery that was “fine” all fall can fail on the first deep cold snap.

This is also where a block heater earns its keep. Plugging in overnight warms the engine block and the oil, which means your engine needs far less cranking power to start — taking a huge load off the battery on the coldest mornings. A good battery plus a working block heater is the combination that gets you started at 30 below. If your block heater cord is cracked, your plug-in isn’t warming anything, or you’re not sure yours even works, ask us about it when you call.

A few cold-weather realities worth knowing: - A battery that’s more than about 3–4 years old is the first thing to suspect heading into winter — get it tested before the cold hits, not after you’re stranded. - Short trips in deep cold don’t always fully recharge the battery, so it can slowly fall behind over the winter even if nothing is “broken.” - A slow crank in October is a warning, not background noise. It usually means the battery won’t make it through January.

Why won’t my car start in cold weather in Alaska?

A cold battery delivers less power than a warm one, and cold, thick oil makes your engine harder to turn over — so on the coldest mornings your battery is at its weakest right when your engine demands the most. Most cold no-starts come down to a weak or aging battery, a charging-system fault (alternator or starter), or a battery being drained overnight. How long does a car battery last in Alaska?

Cold winters are hard on batteries, so up here a battery often gives you fewer good years than the same battery would in a warm climate. Once a battery is past about 3–4 years, it’s worth testing every fall before the cold hits. We’ll test yours and tell you honestly whether it has another winter in it.

Do I really need a block heater?

Is it my battery or my alternator?

They feel almost the same from the driver’s seat, which is exactly why we test both before replacing anything.
